Adar Poonawalla took over as CEO of the Serum Institute of India (SII) in 2011 at the age of 31. Since then, he has boldly led the company his father founded into new frontiers. Today, SII is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer supplying low-cost vaccines to 170 countries.
Under Poonawalla’s leadership, SII played a pivotal role in making Covid-19 vaccines accessible globally. His aggressive investments enabled high-volume production of Covishield to immunize India’s population during the pandemic. SII also provided millions of vaccine doses to other nations, earning acclaim for its humanitarian efforts.
Beyond vaccines, Poonawalla is diversifying SII’s business into other healthcare areas. The company plans to produce monoclonal antibodies, biosimilars, and cancer drugs in the coming years. Poonawalla acquired Dutch biotech firm Bilthoven Biologicals and partnered with US-based Codex DNA to equip SII with new capabilities.
Poonawalla also has his eye on India’s clean energy goals. He founded h2e Power Systems to produce hydrogen electrolyzers which create emission-free fuel. By enabling green hydrogen production, this new venture aligns with India’s net zero emissions target.
Under Poonawalla’s leadership, SII revenues have surged to over $1 billion. However, his business strategies look beyond profits alone. By delivering affordable vaccines and pioneering solutions like green hydrogen technology, he aims to benefit society and spearhead sustainable change. Poonawalla’s vision and dynamism will continue steering the Serum Institute to new heights.
